GMO Victory: Maine Second State to Enact GMO Labeling

gmo-labeling-maineIn another blow against the propaganda machine that has been fueled by GMO juggernauts like Monsanto and others, Maine will now become the second state (after Connecticut) to launch mandatory labeling for food products that contain genetically modified ingredients.

A major victory, though it does contain a stipulation: Five nearby states must also adopt GMO labeling legislation.

It’s certainly not what we wanted, though it does open the floor for the nearby states to get started on their own legislation. And amazingly, this move would affect a whopping 70% or so of all of the products that currently reside in Maine grocery stores in the event the neighboring states join on — a major hit against manufacturers that continue to cling to including genetically altered ingredients within their food items. It will be no surprise, then, when Monsanto and its goons attempt to sue the law out of existence by citing worthless science that GMOs are ‘the exact same’ as natural ingredients.

Unfortunately, Monsanto has been successful in assaulting GMO labeling in the past both monetarily and legally. After all, you may remember when Monsanto openly impersonated federal agencies in order to quell California’s Prop 37 GMO labeling campaign — a move that they were able to get away with.

The Maine decision is indeed a victory for awareness regarding the necessity and popularity of GMO labeling, but it is now up to us to push other states to adopt similar legislation in order to activate the campaign to the fullest level.

  3. Safety is a non-issue. GMO's are the most tested food in the world. Even the EU couldn't find anything wrong with them. I love growing them because they are so good for the environment. I use less pesticides and fewer resources. They are great for the planet.

  4. GMO is a misnomer. All foods have been genetically modified. There isn't a plant in existence that hasn't been modified, naturally or otherwise over time. Why be afraid of splicing a gene that makes a plant resistant to Glyphosate? I have weeds that have developed that exact same resistance naturally. If the DNA inserted is safe then the crop is safe. Since I started growing GMO's I have reduced Atrazine usage by 75%, post emergent insecticide by 100%, post emergent SU by 100%. I use 80% less pesticides with GMO's and grow more food with the same resources. It's a win/win.

  6. Monsanto didn't have to force me. I was eager to get such a good product. I was tired to trying to harvest weedy crops. GMO is the best technological advancement on my farm in my lifetime.

  7. Douglas, I'm not suggesting that everything the anti-GMO people have to say is true but to suggest that GMO's have been safely tested and are safe is just utter rubbish. You're either working for an enemy of the people willingly (in which case you're an awful human being) or otherwise you're probably mis-informed..

For sure it's not as big of an issue as many people might think it is, but on the other hand it could be way worse than we know. SINCE WE DON'T KNOW then I'd suggest that both sides try to keep an open mind (although one side is a massive company with huge resources, so that's not going to happen)..

If you truly think that large companies such as Monsanto (that have been found in the past to have committed many heinous crimes against humanity in all kinds of ways) give a crap about our safety then you're also mistaken.

I do see your point and a lot of people are not as aware as the farmers themselves of the benefits to growing these kinds of crops.. BUT – the bottom line is WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO KNOW WHAT'S IN OUR FOOD – just the same way that it's law to have an ingredients list. Simple as that.

Why would anyone argue against the idea of labeling food as such unless they have vested interests in LYING TO THE PUBLIC.
